WARNING! Truck Trader.

I placed an ad for an 80 Jeep Wagoneer in the local paper last fall (The Oregonian) and another small local paper (The Valley Times). I received ONE call from Auto Trader (Portland) suggesting I advertise with them. I said NO and do not call me again. That was it. I never heard from them again. I got 3-4 other calls from both ads but the car never sold.

This spring I advertised the same truck in Auto Trader (actually Truck Trader and with picture). Their main office is a couple of miles from me and they took the picture of the truck when I drove over there to place the ad. I chose the "run until sold" option for a bit higher rate. I still only got a few phone calls, but the buyers were more focused due to the more effective and detailed advertising in Truck Trader. I sold it in 3 weeks.

I have not had any calls from Auto Trader except for that first time. I am very satisfied with the service they provided. Are we talking about the same company? The one I used is local to my area and has a 503 area code.

Please help me sell my truck.

Our '96 F350 PSD, dually is still unsold. It's a great truck, reasonably priced and loaded to tow but we haven't been able to move it. Can someone help me to find a place on the web to sell it? I looked at e-bay, but it was scary and I didn't understand how to *wrap it and ship it* if I sold it there. An explanation of how e-bay works on MVs would be helpful.
TAI,
Janet

Janet, Just a suggestion, I read your posting about selling your truck. I noticed you have no asking price listed. I know when I am looking in the Truck Trader magazine, I only look at the ads with prices. Why would I waste time just calling to find the asking price with so many other vehicles for sale I know the starting price of??
Also, speaking of the truck trader, see if your location has one. It's reasonably priced, and usually you can pay one flat fee for as long as it takes to sell your truck (You have to call every Tuesday after about 6 weeks to confirm you still want the add in. )
Also you didn't mention where you are, (or where the truck is). If it wasn't a dually, I might be interested myself

Question about Auto Traders/Truck Traders

Where would I find out information having to do with companies having territorial rights on products/services they provide?? More detailed, I'm wondering if the Auto Trader/Truck Trader company has some sort of territorial right on the service they provide....magazine and online.....Thanks in advance...
LennyZ.

There's nothing to prevent you from starting a similar service, LennyZ, however; you must be aware of their trademark rights, and make sure you don't copy their name, for example. They don't have any territory rights. There's no such thing as far as I know.
Usually it's companies that protect their own territory rights by their own product from being sold by more than one person in the same territory.
If you want to sell a similar and competing product in the same area it's fair ball. That's the nature of an open market place. That being said - if you were to use the names Auto Trader or Truck Trader I'm pretty sure you would see a cease and desist letter within hours of your first public advertising.
Cheers,
John
